Tips to Maintain Your Car’s Air Conditioner Throughout the Summer

As the hot summer months continue, it is important to keep your car’s air conditioner functioning optimally. Perform these preventative maintenance tips every two weeks throughout the summer to keep from having to have your car’s AC serviced.

  • Do a simple test of the air conditioner to be sure it is working properly. Turn on the AC while the car is running. Put the flow setting on fresh air (not recirculated). You should feel cold air blowing out of the vents into the car. The air should not start cold and turn warm or blow warm air intermittently. Then, change the air pressure settings to see if the airflow changes accordingly. Open and close each of the vents to be sure that all of them are blowing out air. Listen for any unusual sounds coming from the AC. Finally, smell the air coming out of the vents for any strange odors that could indicate a leak.
  • Clean all the carpeting and mats in your car. Dirt and grit from inside the car can get into the AC duct and clog it. Vacuum the carpeting, spray it with a carpet cleaner, and scrub it with a hard-bristled brush. Rinse with water and pat dry with clean towels. The car mats can be removed and cleaned with warm water and some laundry detergent.
  • Check the AC filter. The filter catches carbon and dirt particles to make sure the air inside your car doesn’t become polluted. If the filter has debris built up inside, it will no longer function properly. Cleaning an AC filter requires removing it and using an air compressor with the right amount of pressure. If you are not able to do this properly, having the filter replaced is a relatively inexpensive solution.
  • Look under the hood at the AC compressor. If the air pressure is normal but the air coming out of the vents is warm, there might be a problem with the compressor. Visually inspect the compressor clutch to see if it is engaging properly. The compressor is usually located towards the front of the engine, just inside the grill of the car. The tension on the belt of the compressor should be tight. If it is loose, your car needs a new compressor belt.
  • Check for any leaks in refrigerant. Look for any oily residue on the hoses that attach the components of your car’s AC. If you find any oily spots indicating a leak, you will need to hire a professional to repair it.
  • Check for freezing. If your car’s AC blows cold air initially but then the air stops being cold after a while, this could indicate freezing of the system components. This can only happen if moisture has gotten into the AC’s system, indicating faulty hoses, pipes, or seals. If this is the case, bring your car to a mechanic to perform a full leak check of the AC.

If you have found any problems with the functioning of your car’s AC, give Virginia Auto Service a call today at 602-266-0200 or schedule a visit with us online at your convenience.

10 Gifts for the Car Enthusiast in Your Life

At times, holiday gift shopping can be a little difficult. It can be hard to know just what people want or need. If there is a car enthusiast in your life, or maybe a teen who has just gotten their first car, we have put together a list of 10 gift ideas they might enjoy this holiday season.

  1. Roadside Emergency Kit

Show you care with a gift that ensures their safety. Give your new driver or car lover a roadside emergency kit to help protect them in the event of a breakdown or accident. You can purchase premade kits or make one on your own. Make sure there are things like a flashlight, Band-Aids and other first aid items, jumper cables, and reflective triangles or flares. Including some non-perishable food items, blankets, and a shovel may come in handy too. This is a present you hope gets little or no use, but they will be glad they have it if the unexpected happens.

  1. Roadside Assistance Membership

This goes along with the safety aspect and, if you can afford to do both, would go along nicely with the roadside emergency kit- but works well as a stand-alone gift as well. Worry less when your loved one is on the road with the knowledge that if something should happen, they have quick access to help. For a limited time, AAA Arizona is offering $32 off gift memberships. AAA memberships include:

  • 24/7 Roadside Assistance with the fastest average response time in the industry
  • Coverage in any car, anytime – as the driver or a passenger
  • Exclusive member discounts on shopping, dining, and entertainment
  • Expert vacation planning
  • Member-only travel benefits
  • And more!
  1. Floor Mats

Okay, so this may not sound like the most exciting gift, but someone who REALLY loves their car will appreciate the gift of a custom, all-weather floor mats. Good floor mats will protect the vehicle’s interior from the elements, dirt and grime, and everyday wear and tear. Simply take down their vehicle make, model, and year and you can order them a nice set of custom floor mats that complement their taste and vehicle nicely.

  1. Road Trip Package

Do you have a loved one who drives around a lot or who takes a lot of road trips? Surprise them with a homemade road trip package. You can fill a basket with some of their favorite, easy to eat behind the wheel snacks, a travel coffee mug, an iTunes or Google gift card so they can choose some new road trip tunes, a cell phone car charger, car air freshener, maybe a roll of toilet paper for the rest stops that may not have any, and anything else you can think of that can make their road trips more enjoyable.

  1. Race Car Driving Experience

Most car enthusiasts will thrill at the idea of getting behind the wheel of a super-fast car! If your loved one would prefer to be a passenger rather than drive, the Phoenix International Raceway offers both driving and ride-along experiences.

  1. Sun Shield and Ice Scraper

As a Phoenix, AZ resident, the sun shield may make sense to you, but you may scratch your head at the idea of an ice scraper. We suggest this because Arizona is huge! If your loved one plans on traveling up north to Prescott, Payson, Flagstaff, Williams or the like, especially in the winter, an ice scraper will come in handy! Your loved one will appreciate that you are protecting both them and their vehicle from the winter elements. Brushing snow and ice off a windshield with your hands will lead to cold or frostbitten fingers, and no one wants that! The sun shields will come in handy here in Phoenix, especially in the summer. The scorching hot sun will not only make the interior of the vehicle extra hot, but it could damage their vehicle’s interior. A sun shield will help to minimize the heat and keep the interior protected. Sun shields can be fun too as they often come with different designs and patterns, so you can choose one to match your loved one’s personal taste.

  1. Model of Their Favorite Car

We know, you would prefer to buy them the actual car, but that is usually unrealistic. So, get them the next best thing. There are plenty of amazing model cars for sale online or you can purchase them a kit to build their own at a place like Michael’s or Hobby Lobby.

  1. Car Memorabilia

It doesn’t matter if they prefer a Chevy or a Porsche, you can find memorabilia associated with it somewhere. There are items available from t-shirts to ornaments to coffee mugs to mouse pads and more. Help your car enthusiast show their love for the car of their choice wherever they may go. Car accessories that have their favorite sports team are another great option, like these Arizona Cardinals seat protectors.

  1. Car Detailing

Car enthusiasts everywhere will tell you, things can’t get much better than a car that shines like new. So, why not gift them with a gift card to have their vehicle detailed? Car detailing is a luxury that many people don’t often spend money on, so it will be highly appreciated. Or, if you’d prefer, you can build them a kit of supplies with which they can deep clean their car themselves, or offer to do it for them. Nothing says “I love you” quite like manual labor.

  1. Automotive Services

Taking care of a vehicle can get expensive, and this time of year when everyone is purchasing gifts for others, automotive services may be put on the back burner. Ease the strain on your loved one’s pockets by gifting them with a service at Virginia Auto Service this holiday season. We are your go-to in Phoenix, AZ for reliable, high-quality auto repair services. Call (602) 266-0200 or schedule an appointment online.

How to Avoid Hydroplaning- And What to Do When It Happens

The monsoons may have been late to start this year, but once they did they sure did not disappoint.

Only a few days ago Phoenix was hit by a massive storm which resulted in storm damage and flooding over much of the area. According to AZCentral.com, the storms caused heavy street flooding, power outages and extensive flight delays at Sky Harbor International Airport. The Phoenix Zoo was even forced to close for a day following the intense storm in order to clean up the multiple trees that were downed, along with two tents that were destroyed. Thankfully no animals were injured in the storm.

These crazy weather conditions can bring on a road hazard that is dangerous for motorists- slick, water-filled roads that could result in hydroplaning.

What is Hydroplaning?

Hydroplaning is the term that is often used to refer to the sliding or skidding of the tires of the vehicle over a wet surface. It occurs when the tire encounters more water than it can scatter. There is water pressure in the front of the wheel that pushes water under the wheel separating it from the surface of the road. Essentially, your vehicle begins to ride on top of standing water instead of the surface of the road resulting in a loss of traction. Losing traction results in a loss of braking, steering, and power control.

Contrary to popular belief, it is possible for a vehicle to hydroplane when the road is only slightly damp. Even just a light rain can mix with the oil residue on the surface of the road creating slick conditions that can make vehicles, especially those going 35 mph or more, to hydroplane.  A scary, and potentially deadly, event for the driver and motorists in the surrounding area.

How to Prevent Hydroplaning

  1. Slow down. Like we said above, hydroplaning is more likely to occur at speeds of 35 mph or higher. The moment rain hits your windshield, slow your speed at least five to ten miles below the speed limit. In heavier rain and/or windy conditions you may want to lower your speed even more. Avoid sudden accelerations -such as passing other motorists- as sudden increases in speed increase the risk of hydroplaning.
  2. Keep your tires properly maintained. Tires have tread (grooves) that are designed to channel water from beneath the tire, creating greater friction with the road surface minimizing or even preventing instances of hydroplaning. When the tread is worn down you do not get as much traction and it can be very dangerous to drive on slick or bald tires. You should replace tires when needed and perform regular tire rotations. Also, keeping the tires properly inflated increases traction and can help prevent hydroplaning.
  3. Avoid driving in outer lanes where water collects. You’ve seen it, driving around during or after a storm there are some outer lanes where water seems to accrue, which can be dangerous. When possible, avoid driving in these lanes. If you can see the standing water, then it is very likely that your vehicle will hydroplane as it drives over it.
  4. Drive in the tracks left by the cars ahead of you. The cars ahead of you have started separating the water for you, increasing your traction and connectivity to the pavement.
  5. Turn off cruise control. You should never use cruise control while it is raining or when you are driving on wet roads. Should you begin to hydroplane with your vehicle in cruise control it will take longer for you to disable the function and start to regain control of your car.
  6. Avoid driving aggressively. Aggressive driving is never safe, however, in bad weather and on wet roads it becomes even more dangerous. Do not make any quick or sharp turns, avoid hard braking, and like we said above, do not speed or pass other motorists.

How to Recover from Hydroplaning

Unfortunately, there are times that hydroplaning will occur no matter how careful you are. These are the steps you can take to regain control if you should begin hydroplaning on a wet surface.

  1. Remove your foot from the accelerator immediately. You should never use your brakes in response to hydroplaning. Braking suddenly can result in your vehicle skidding completely out of control.
  2. Gently turn the steering wheel in the direction your vehicle is hydroplaning. It may seem contradictory, but doing so will realign your tires with the direction your vehicle is moving, helping you regain steering control.
  3. Wait for reconnection. It will be obvious to you when the vehicle is past the hydroplaning situation and has reconnected with the surface of the road.
  4. Pull over and breathe. Hydroplaning can be a scary event. Give yourself a minute to recover and collect yourself before continuing your journey.

Keep Your Car Cool in the Summer

As Phoenix, Arizona residents, we know too well that getting into the car in the summer can be brutal. It almost feels like you have entered an oven and it seems to take forever for it to cool down to a comfortable temperature.

The good news is there are some simple things that you can do to help keep your vehicle cooler in the summer. From tinted windows to getting the best out of your air conditioning, these tips will help make driving in the summer a bit more tolerable.

Reduce the interior temperature of your car by limiting the amount of heat that enters through your windows:

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), your car windows act as a sort of greenhouse. They continue to state that even on a cooler day, as low as 57 degrees, the temperature inside a vehicle can reach 110 degrees. In the summer, the interior can reach extremely dangerous temperatures, and you should never leave your pet or child in the car. To help limit the amount of heat entering your vehicle through your windows you can try the following things:

  • Crack the windows. Closed windows trap hot air in the vehicle, leaving the windows cracked slightly will allow for some airflow. com states that if you have a sunroof you can crack that or use the vent feature if weather permits. Crack the windows and sunroof open slightly -less than an inch- to avoid a potential break in.
  • Park in the shade. According to Consumer Reports, you should look for a shady spot to park in, or park in a way so that the sun hits the rear window instead of the windshield to help keep the steering wheel and front seats a bit cooler.
  • Use a sunshade. Sunshades are a great and affordable investment for Phoenix residents. They help block the rays coming into your vehicle, keeping the temperature slightly lower. This can help your vehicle cool down faster once the car has started and helps to keep the steering wheel cooler to the touch.
  • Get your windows tinted. This is more expensive than a sunshade, but it is also a more constant way to block out the sun.

Your seats have an impact on the temperature and comfortability of your vehicle:

Living in Phoenix, you may want to consider purchasing a vehicle that has cloth seats instead of leather; as scorching hot seats can cause discomfort and possibly even burn you. Some vehicles even come with air-conditioned seats that circulate cool air around your back, if you can afford this added luxury we highly recommend it! These seats have a sort of mesh on the car seat that allows air to flow through it. There are fans in the seat that produce air circulation. If you must have leather seats, Cars.com suggests you purchase cooling gel seat covers or pads. Even something as simple as placing a towel over leather seats can provide some relief.

Maximize your vehicle’s cooling ability:

If you aren’t using the air conditioning efficiently or if it isn’t functioning properly, it will probably take longer than you would like for your vehicle to cool to a comfortable temperature. As soon as you start the engine, open all the windows slightly and turn the air on full blast. Leave the windows open slightly until the air inside begins to feel cool. Remember, hot air rises, so doing this pushes the hot air out of the windows as cool air comes out of the vents. After the interior is at a comfortable temperature, use the recirculating feature along with the A/C to maintain the coldest air.

You may not be able to control the weather, but you can prepare your vehicle for the hot, hot summer. We hope these tips help you stay cool and comfortable! If you need help keeping your vehicle cool, Virginia Auto Service is here for you. We are your go-to in Phoenix, AZ for reliable, high-quality auto repair services. How to Stay Safe on the Road in a Dust Storm

It’s monsoon season in Phoenix, AZ and that means motorists could potentially have a run-in with a heavy dust storm. Often our dust storms are extremely dense and can severely limit motorists visibility. It is important for your safety, and the safety of others, that you know what to do if you happen to encounter a dust storm on your travels.

There are two major kinds of dust-related hazards Arizona drivers face: dust storms/haboobs and dust channels. But what is the difference?

  • Dust storm– Easy to avoid as the massive height and span are seen miles in the distance giving motorists plenty of opportunity to exit the roadway or choose another route.
  • Dust channel– These consist of blowing dust that whips across the roadway engulfing your vehicle in low or no visibility without warning. These fast-moving blowing dust events can result in serious crashes because they give motorists little or no time to respond.

According to the Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT), while blowing dust can occur anywhere in Arizona, there’s a stretch of Interstate 10 between Phoenix and Tucson where dust channels often suddenly develop, so ADOT is currently installing a first-of-its-kind dust detection zone from mileposts 209-219. They state that nearly half of all blowing dust-related crashes that occur on I-10 occur within a half-mile of milepost 214, northwest of Picacho Peak.

In 2012, ADOT began the “Pull Aside, Stay Alive” campaign to emphasize the importance of driving safety during a dust storm. These are their tips:

  1. Avoid driving into or through a dust storm.
  2. If you encounter a dust storm, immediately check traffic around your vehicle (front, back and to the side) and begin slowing down.
  3. Do not wait until poor visibility makes it difficult to safely pull off the roadway — do it as soon as possible. Completely exit the highway if you can.
  4. Do not stop in a travel lane or in the emergency lane. Look for a safe place to pull completely off the paved portion of the roadway.
  5. Turn off all vehicle lights, including your emergency flashers. You do not want other vehicles approaching from behind to use your lights as a guide, possibly crashing into your parked vehicle.
  6. Set your emergency brake and take your foot off the brake.
  7. Stay in the vehicle with your seatbelts buckled and wait for the storm to pass.
  8. Drivers of high-profile vehicles should be especially aware of changing weather conditions and travel at reduced speeds.

At Virginia Auto Service, we like to help people with their vehicles and road safety in any way that we can. We hope these tips, provided by ADOT, help you stay safer this monsoon and dust-storm season. We are your go-to in Phoenix, AZ for reliable, high-quality auto repair services. How to Prepare Your Vehicle for the Monsoons

Ready or not, here they come! Though the monsoons have been slow to start this year, they are on their way. Make sure you take the extra time Mother Nature has given you this monsoon season to help ready your vehicle for the dust storms and torrential downpours headed your way.

Driving during the monsoons poses bigger risks just a longer commute. In fact, according to the Arizona Department of Transportation, more than 5,000 crashes occurred in 2015 due to rain in Arizona. For this reason, it is important that you have your vehicle ready to handle the roads as safely as possible.

Before the monsoons start, check off these seven items on your vehicle maintenance to-do list:

  1. Check your tires. Make sure your tires are rotated and aligned every 6,000 miles. Check for the proper inflation levels, your vehicle specific recommended psi can be found in your owner’s manual. The tire pressure should be checked at least once a month. Inspect your tire tread and replace your tire if it is worn down to 2/32 of an inch or less. Don’t forget to inspect your spare!
  2. Change your wiper blades. The wipers are an often-overlooked safety feature of the vehicle. They are what allow motorists to see the road clearly in a storm. It is recommended that you check your wiper blades every six months and replace them once a year, or whenever you notice a decrease in visibility. Replacing wipers before the start of the monsoons is a good idea, as being caught in a storm with failing wipers can be extremely dangerous.
  3. Inspect the battery. A dead battery is not a pleasant experience, especially during monsoon season. Check that the battery is clean and free of corrosion and that everything is tightly secured. Have your battery tested to make sure it is properly holding its charge. If your battery is over three years old, you may want to consider having it replaced. Remember to never handle a battery unless you know how to do so safely.
  4. Check the lights. Visibility is extremely important during the monsoons. You need to make sure you can see, and that you are seen. Make sure all exterior lights (head, tail, reverse, and indicator) are working correctly. Repair cloudy headlight lenses, and for even better visibility, consider using high-intensity halogen headlights.
  5. Inspect your belts and hoses. Make sure there are no cracks, tears, or glazing, and that everything is tightened properly. Summer heat is hard on the hoses and belts so it is important to monitor them closely this time of year to avoid any potential damage.
  6. Check the air filters. It is dusty this time of year, which is hard on both your cabin and engine air filters. Have them checked then replace if needed.
  7. Inspect your brakes. Being able to stop safely is extremely important at all times, however, in inclement weather conditions, we rely even more heavily on the abilities of our brakes. Before the rains start, have a brake expert inspect your brakes to make sure they are in top condition. Your life and the life of other motorists depends on it.

Virginia Auto Service is here to help you make sure you are driving a vehicle that can safely handle monsoon weather conditions. We are your go-to in Phoenix, AZ for reliable, high-quality auto repair services. Call (602) 266-0200 or schedule an appointment online.

7 Essential Summer Car Care Tips

Summer is the time of year for road trips to get out of the heat! It is also the time of year that your vehicle is the most susceptible to trouble. To protect your vehicle, and keep it running optimally, there is some special maintenance that needs to be performed this time of year.

According to vehicle manufacturers, Arizona is an extreme climate, which means that cars aren’t usually engineered to drive here! “Scheduled maintenance” guidelines that are found in the owner’s manuals and that are suggested by dealers don’t take the extreme summer weather conditions found in Arizona into account- unless specifically noted. This makes getting your vehicle summer ready that much more important.

Here are 7 essential summer car care tips:

Perform Regular Oil Changes

The oil in your vehicle should be changed every 3000 miles or three months. It doesn’t take a whole lot of contaminants to harm your engine. In Phoenix, Arizona it is extremely important to stay on top of oil changes as more dust gets ingested into the intake and deposited into the oil here than it does in other climates. When dirt is in the oil it breaks down its viscosity and will eventually erode seals and piston rings if left unattended. During the monsoon season (June – September) we are prone to haboobs and minor dust storms, so changing your oil more often may be necessary, even synthetic. Make sure you are checking and changing the oil filter too, as it can only hold so much before it becomes ineffective.

Check Air Filters

Inspect and/or change the air filter at least once every other oil change. As air filters get dirty, tiny dust particles escape into the intake and find their way into the engine. Like we said above, Phoenix, Arizona is very dusty, so you will likely collect dirt more rapidly here than you would in other places.

Inspect Your Tires

Summertime in Phoenix is also blowout season. Inspect your tires every time you fill your gas tank for wear and proper inflation. The contact pad of your tires should be square and not too narrow or bulging.  Make sure the tires are wearing evenly. Be cautious of over-inflation as the increased temperature (~160F) of the asphalt on the highways will increase the PSI by about 10psi. If you need new tires (replace at 3/32nds of tread remaining) you may want to consider purchasing “summer” tires. If you visit the mountains in the winter months, however, you may want to stick with all-season tires- always take your own driving habits into consideration when purchasing tires.

Make Sure the AC Functions Properly

If your vehicle’s AC is not functioning properly do not hesitate to bring it in for service. Summer temperatures are brutal in Phoenix and the AC is not just a luxury here, it is essential. The AC system is meant to be completely sealed and never leak, so if it is leaking it must be repaired asap.

Inspect the Belts and Hoses

In Phoenix, with the increased heat and minimal humidity, the belts and hoses are known to fail quickly. At every oil change, and before any long road trips, inspect the belts and hoses for wear. We suggest bringing a replacement on any road trips with you as a precaution. Make sure the belts and hoses aren’t soft, torn, cracked, or blistered. It is better for your engine, and wallet, to stay on top of them and change them before they fail.

Change Your Wiper Blades

Arizona summers bring along the monsoons. Make sure your wipers are ready to keep your windshield clear during the downpour. Wiper blades dry and crack up here more frequently than elsewhere and should be inspected when you fill the gas tank throughout the summer season.

Monitor the Radiator/Cooling System

Watch your engine temperatures and inspect for leaks. Pay close attention to it. Watch the water level to make sure it isn’t decreasing, watch the temperature of your gauges and pay attention to any strange odors. It is extremely common for cars to overheat in Arizona, and many overheating issues are related to a broken thermostat. If your vehicle overheats you need to have it inspected and diagnosed immediately.  Keep a gallon of coolant and water in the vehicle for long road trips.

Remember, routine maintenance is preventative by nature. Don’t wait for a problem to prompt you into it. When you take proper care of your vehicle, it will take care of you, and routine maintenance goes a long way to avoid costly repairs. Arizona summers may be extreme conditions for vehicles to put up with, but with the above tips, your vehicle can survive it.
